During the research, the scientists of the University of Western Australia observed hump-fin dolphins ( Sousa sahulensis ), common in the north-west of the continent, which 'gifted' sponges to females, on 17 occasions in a span of 1700 kilometres. The behavior has been observed in several colonies, according to the study published in Scientific Reports (Nature). Sometimes the females continued to ignore the attentions of the male until the male, probably frustrated, 'throw' the sponge in the direction of the female.
