The expression alludes to a fable by Aesop ( The hen that lays the golden eggs ) which tells of a hen that laid a golden egg every day; its owner, not being satisfied with just one egg a day, decided to kill the hen thinking that in its viscera it would have found large quantities of the precious metal; Unfortunately for him he discovered instead that the poor animal was inside a hen like all the others and therefore lost a considerable source of wealth.

The moral of the story is intuitive: it is better to be satisfied with what you have and shy away from greed because we could face nasty surprises.

Goose that lays the golden eggs - Meaning - Origin

The goose that lays the golden egg is an extremely profitable someone or something

THE HEN FROM THE GOLDEN EGGS

Once upon a time there was a man who had a beautiful fat hen. And so far there is nothing strange.
The peculiarity was that this hen laid one golden egg a day!
The owner was very happy at first: every morning he sold the golden egg and got a tidy sum, thanks to which he did not miss anything.

After some time, however, that sum began to no longer be enough for him. Her greed for gold increased and she began to think: “If this hen lays an egg a day, who knows how much she has in her belly! If I opened it, I would become rich! ”.

Unfortunately he found that, inside, the goose that lays golden eggs was no different from all the other hens.

Moreover, from that moment on, the poor girl no longer even made a golden egg, but ordinary white eggs.

Thus, for not being satisfied with what he had, the farmer was left with nothing left.
(On the other hand, he learned a lot of egg-based recipes, to cook for breakfast, lunch and dinner!).

Aesop's short fable The goose that lays the golden eggs teaches that those who are not satisfied with what they have often lose out.
This makes us understand how, in life, it is good to be happy with the luck we have. If we have nice toys or clothes, there is no point in wanting new ones for no reason. We must not be too selfish and greedy, but learn to be content.
One golden egg a day is more than enough, isn't it?
