Dolphins are very intelligent animals and enjoy playing with each other, jumping and splashing the water, as well as exploiting the waves generated by the keel of boats or large whales to be able to move effortlessly: however, they are great swimmers, so much so that , with their 40 km / h or more of maximum speed, they are considered among the fastest cetaceans. They emit remarkable and differentiated verses with which they communicate: there seems to be a regionalization of the types of sounds, with a substrate of common sounds and others typical of certain populations or groups. In any case, the different tone and frequency of the sound indicates a different content of the message.
Compared to the "cousin" bottlenose dolphin, the common dolphin is much less known by the layman, mainly because the bottlenose dolphins, much easier to raise and train, are much more common in water parks: the common dolphin, on the other hand, in captivity proves to be extremely shy .
A new Australian study, after 10 years of observations, reveals surprising rituals of a local species of dolphins, who offer gifts to conquer the females: not bunches of flowers but large and colorful marine sponges uprooted from the seabed. They have also been seen, and filmed, 'throwing' the sponge at the female with the muzzle, in a possible sign of affection and strength.
During the research, scientists at the University of Western Australia observed gibbous-finned dolphins ( Sousa sahulensis ), common in the northwest of the continent, 'giving' sponges to females on 17 occasions over a span of 1,700 kilometers. The behavior was observed in several colonies, according to the study published in Scientific Reports (Nature). Sometimes the females continued to ignore the attentions of the male until the male, probably frustrated, 'threw' the sponge in the direction of the female.
