Flamingo derives from the Latin “phoenicopterus” and from the Greek “phoinikòpteros” which means “purple wings” and refers to the elegant bird with a romantic pink color. It is possible to find them along the Italian coasts at the Salina dei Monaci and at the Saline di Margherita di Savoia , in Puglia.
Its characteristic pink color depends on the fact that it feeds on a rare red alga and on crustaceans such as the pink shrimp Artemia Salina; these give the feathers these wonderful pigments of ethereal and nuanced hues.
The flamingo is said to have inspired the myth of the flaming-winged phoenix . The ancient symbol of transformation and resurrection, the phoenix which at the end of its life is consumed by fire and then magically reborn from its ashes.
This enchanting specimen of bird has fascinated, over time, many artists, poets and writers. Just think of the French Valery , Grazia Deledda or Pablo Neruda, who dedicates the poem "Flamenco" or "Flamingo" to him:
“ It was his body made of feathers
his wings were of petal
it was a rose flying towards sweetness.
I left those regions
I dressed in tails and iron
many pains have bitten me
as in that remote lake
keep living the vision of a bird
or indelible angel who transformed
the light of day
with the splendor of his presence
and its rosy movement. "
It is with these words that Neruda expresses all his wonder and amazement in front of such a royal and sacred bird, refined and elegant in its sweet color of tenderness and ingenuity.
The pink flamingo symbolically embodies on the one hand positivity, charm, elegance, balance, rebirth, love, sensitivity, dreams, independence, evolution and change, sincerity and altruism, on the other hand, is synonymous with vanity, emotional dependence, excessive vulnerability.
Now also become an icon of modern times in various fields, it was a sacred animal to Ra , God of the Sun, among the Egyptians .
It is a bird that invites reflection, which conveys a sense of elevation and purity and, in Hinduism it represents a symbol of transition from life to death, from darkness to light. His living in the ranks and hunting together with his fellows enhances the spirit of collaboration and mutual help.
Also recognized as an emblem of clairvoyance , its relationship with water, a natural element attributed to the psyche and soul, connects us to the higher states of consciousness and introspection. It is said that dreaming of a flamingo is a harbinger of new experiences, while dreaming of being surrounded by it would highlight the nature of a narcissistic person.
