The Bear is a totem animal that symbolizes the link between heaven and earth . It embodies positive qualities such as courage, kindness, great will and strength. But it is also a symbol of negative qualities such as wickedness, ferocity and greed. In the traditions of the Native Americans the Bear indicated the action of a supernatural force . It also indicated meditation and understanding of the mysteries and cycles related to life and time.
In China it is a sign of strength, courage, virility and authority. In Japan it is a symbol of strength, heroism, affability and patience. Some peoples such as the Greeks and the ancient Germanic peoples associated the Bear with their deities . Furthermore, they represented the latter with the likeness of the Bear . Some shamans used the skins of this mammal to get in touch with evil spirits. For the Celts his conception is linked to the Moon, taking on a feminine meaning. It is therefore related to pregnancy, motherhood and the protection of the offspring (or of the family in general).
Since it usually goes into hibernation (in reality it is not a real hibernation since the Bear is able to decrease body temperature and heart rate but still remains awake, so much so that the females give birth and raise the offspring), moving away from reality for some time, the Bear also represents the capacity for introspection . The totem therefore guides us towards an inner analysis in search of that part of the unknown ego and our most unconscious desires. It is useful to invoke the energy of this animal to reach the set goals and to resolve the dilemmas and obstacles that life poses for us.
